Graham crackers

During ISATs our kids get graham crackers…  which inspired me to write this…

Graham crackers, such a childhood treat.

When I went to daycare as a little girl, we had them as a snack with margarine smothered on top.  I don’t have margarine in my house, so I don’t indulge in that snack anymore.  But in my college and high school years I felt a little nostalgic and may have had a cracker or two with the not so buttery spread.

My graham crackers then took on a more dessert vibe.  CHOCOLATE.  Chocolate around me is in danger.  It’s an addiction that is similar to those M&M commercials we see on TV.  I will devour you.  No piece of chocolate is safe around me.

Graham crackers with chocolate morsels melted on top.  Graham crackers with nutella, that wonderful hazelnutty, chocolately spread, on top…  and who could forget s’mores!  Oh how divine graham crackers are with chocolate.

Then, I decided that I needed to be a bit healthier.  Fruit, fruit and graham crackers sound good together.  Well, cool whip sounds good with fruit and graham crackers.  A parfait!  Raspberries, blackberries, cool whip, and crushed graham crackers…

Oh take me to heaven now!  As long as there are graham crackers, I think I’ll be happy.

My memories are something that I treasure. Some memories I want to capture in writing because I want to be able to share them from generation to generation, others are just something I want to keep in my heart. Whether it's something that just happened or something that happened years ago, I want to have it to keep.

  1. Graham crackers dipped into hot chocolate on a snowy day – my favorite “go to” when my boys were little! Yes, I love these, too. Thanks for sharing!!

I had a smile on my face as I read this slice. I like how you went from the “not so buttery” phase of graham cracker-eating to the healthier fruit parfait phase of your life. By the way, that graham cracker parfait sounds super YUMMY!

Rachel I love this slice!!! I am a huge graham cracker fan. Maybe that’s why it drew me in at first. But, I stayed because of your exquisite writing. Short. Sweet (literally). Descriptive. Emotion. Slice.

Loved how you took a topic like graham crackers and created such a beautiful slice filled with so much description.

I like your active voice— that is something I am trying to do more in my writing—- “I WILL DEVOUR YOU!” way to be active! good job!

All I thought of was, “where is the éclair?” My mom would make it with graham crackers, and I was always allowed to eat the broken ones. I like how this is kind of a metaphor for life and how we grow–buttery spread to wiser healthier choices, yet we still go back to some of those not so healthy memories.

  7. “I will devour you” I LOVE that part!! You are making me hungry! I love how you write. Off to go eat something delicious… =)
